Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are the cabins easy to get to?
Yes! Both are located less than 1/2 mile off of highway 19 (main thoroughfare thru Maggie Valley). The road is a one-lane road, but it is paved with several pull-offs when you meet oncoming traffic. No steep hills or crazy switchbacks.
2. Can you rent both cabins at the same time?
Yes. Although AirBnB and VRBO do not have this as a feature, if you contact us and the dates are open for both cabins, we can provide a discount and allow you to book each one individually through the platforms.
3. How far is Cataloochee Ski Area?
Cataloochee Ski Area is just 6 miles from the cabins. It is only 1.5 miles on the main road, but then you have to drive up the mountain, takes about 15 minutes during normal driving conditions.
The cabins are in a neighborhood, but as you can tell from the photos, there are plenty of trees and mountain laurel that provides privacy and that “tucked away” feeling.
5. Maggie Valley is a small town, how far is it to a “city?”
Maggie Valley is a quaint mountain town, with very little franchises. We do have local restaurants, a brewery, several gas stations and a dollar general. However, just a 10-15 minute drive away is the town of Waynesville, where you will find all of the necessities needed. Lowes, Grocery Stores, Starbucks, Fast Food, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, additional restaurants, shops and more. They have a wonderful Main Street downtown with eclectic shops and restaurants.
6. How is the cell service and WiFi?
We have great wireless WiFi (Spectrum), although cell phone reception can be limited. We encourage all guests to turn on “wifi-calling” in their phone settings and log into the wifi as soon as they arrive at the cabin.
7. How far of a drive is Harrah’s Casino in Cherokee?
Harrah’s casino is 16 miles away, but because of the mountain road, it takes about 25 minutes to drive there (beautiful ride through the mountains!). You will make one turn onto the main road and take 19 all the way to Harrahs. Harrahs has added many features in recent years, including an indoor bowling alley & game room (all ages), Sports Book (gambling), Gordon Ramsey’s Food Court, Guy Fieri’s Restaurant and more. Check out Harrahs Cherokee for more info.
8. Are Pets allowed?
We do allow well-behaved dogs. If they are larger than 25lbs, please contact the owner for individual permissions. Dog owners must clean up after their dogs outside for future guests.
9. Are there hiking trails close by?
Most of downtown Maggie Valley is privately owned land; however, just a short ride on the road can take you to plenty of amazing hiking destinations. Either stops on the parkway, Cataloochee Valley or in Clyde/Canton, you can find plenty of opportunities. We recommend downloading the AllTrails app on your phone for more info.
10. Have you ever seen Elk at the cabins?
YES! Although most of the time they are spotted close to the main road, live elk have been spotted at the cabins at least twice in the last two years (and we do not live there, so they are probably there much more than that).
11. How much cleaning do you require of guests?
Very little. Just please take your trash to the outside container, and lock up! Your cleaning fee takes care of the rest.
12. Do you allow smoking?
Outside is fine, as long as you discard of your cigarette/cigar butts appropriately (both cabins do have an ashtray outside on the porch). Please empty the ashtrays in the trash and place trash in the outside bins upon checkout.
13. Can you set the HVAC units to different temps?
You can set them to different temperatures AS LONG AS both units are set to EITHER “heat” or “cool.” They cannot operate if the bedroom is on heat and the living room is on cool (or vice versa). As long as they both have the main setting, you can adjust the temperature to your liking per room. (The units operate off of the same outdoor condensing unit).
14. What kind of wildlife have you seen? Are the cabins safe?
The cabins are very safe; none of the wildlife we have seen have been aggressive. Although if you do see elk or any other animal, please keep your distance. We love nature and absolutely love adding to our list of wildlife we have seen at the cabins, and this is just in the last 5 years:
- Deer
- Elk
- Raccoons
- Squirrels
- Otters
- Turkeys
- Possums
- Chipmunks
- Baby Trout (in the creek)
15. I just tried to book one of the cabins but it’s not showing up for the dates I want?
The cabin is likely booked for that date. We open the calendar up 9 months in advance, and some people will book many months in advance (especially for fall).
16. What kinds of activities do you have at the cabins?
We try to keep adding, but this is what we have so far:
Cabin 1:
- board games
- dartboard
- oversized jenga game
- acoustic guitar
- outdoor fire pit
Cabin 2:
- board games
- ring and hook
- cornhole set (in closet, please put back up after use)
- acoustic guitar
- outdoor fire pit
17. Are the cabins decorated for the seasons?
YES! Our personal favorite times of the year are Fall and Christmas, so we go out of our way to decorate both cabins for these seasons. Just another way we make them feel more like home 🙂
18. Can you fish in the creek?
We would not recommend this. We have only seen a few baby trout in the creek, not big enough to catch. The creek, under normal conditions, is only about a foot deep in the deepest parts.
19. You say the cabins are close to town, is anything walkable?
YES! Just a short walk down the road will take you to the main road, and there are several restaurants and even a Dollar General within a short walking distance (in good weather).
20. In case of an emergency, what is the closest medical center?
21. If we bring a dog, is there an emergency vet close by?
Animal Hospital of Waynesville (about 15 minutes away, 91 Depot St, Waynesville, NC 28786) is available for some emergencies during normal hours. If something happens after normal business hours, the closest 24-7 emergency vet clinic is Carolina Animal Specialty & Emergency (CASE), located about 1.5 hours away in Hickory, NC (1625 NC-66, Hickory, NC 28602).
22. Are the cabins handicap accessible?
Both cabins do have a few steps to get up the front (or back) porches. But both do have walk-in showers, so the only challenge would be the porch steps (five for cabin 1, three for cabin 2).
23. Are the cabins motorcycle friendly? (Accessible via motorcycles)
Absolutely! The owners have motorcycles and take them up several times every year. You will have no problems driving to the cabins, the only thing we would like to add in the near future would be covered areas for motorcycle parking. Give us time we will get it done soon!
24. Do you have a charger for electric vehicles?
We do not have a dedicated electric vehicle charger. Both cabins do have standard outside outlets (120v), so as long as you have a converter that will work you can absolutely use them for your electric vehicle.
25. What kind of coffee maker do the cabins have?
Both cabins have both a regular coffee maker and also a k-cup brewer. We do our best to make sure there are k-cups left out for guests.
26. In the winter, if it snows heavily will I be able to leave if necessary?
Our cabins are just inside town limits – so the town will plow the road in case of heavy snow! Also being close to Highway 19 is great, because you wouldn’t have any issues after getting to 19.
27. How often does it snow in the winter?
Obviously, this fluctuates. But in our experience, Maggie Valley usually has at least 6-8 snow events per winter. Some are light dustings, some are accumulations of over inch (or more). The most snow we’ve seen there in the last 6 years was just over 12″ in one day.
28. When is peak season for the leaves in the fall?
This also fluctuates every year, depending on temperatures. As a general rule of thumb, you can start to enjoy the fall temperatures in September, and the Fall Leaf Colors usually start around the end of September and peak in mid-late October. Check out this great interactive map to see updates for this year!
